There is no best Hamptons beach, only a best beach for a particular day. A family with a toddler, a surfer, an angler and a couple chasing a sunset want different things, and the same beach rarely gives all of them. The ten below are chosen for what each does best, and each pick names the fact that earns the spot: guards, water type, facilities or setting.
If you already know what you need, jump to calm water for kids, dog rules, sunsets or quiet. The lifeguard calendar will tell you when the guards are actually on.
The ten, in the order we would send a visitor
Main Beach
The classic. Wide sand, Village lifeguards 10am to 5pm, a color-flag system and a beach office. The pick for a first visit.
Ditch Plains Beach
The Hamptons’ surf beach. A popular reef and sand break with guards, a food truck and trails, and the only beach here that also teaches you something about swell.
Cooper’s Beach
Southampton Village’s one staffed beach, with showers and restrooms, concessions and rentals. It is also the only Village beach that sells a daily parking pass.
Hither Hills State Park
The all-day beach. Ocean swimming May 23 to September 20 in 2026, showers, a playground, camping and hiking, all in one state park.
Foster Memorial (Long) Beach
The calm one. Over a mile of bay shoreline on Noyac Bay with a marked swim area, showers, a concession and 419 parking spaces.
Sagg Main Beach
The big Town beach. More than 1,500 feet of ocean frontage with a deck, showers, a concession and a beach wheelchair.
Atlantic Avenue Beach
Amagansett’s easy ocean beach. Guards from 9am, a concession stand, an accessible mat and a free surf wheelchair.
Cupsogue Beach County Park
Ocean and bay in one park, with bass fishing, RV camping and a food concession at the western end of Dune Road.
Montauk Point State Park
The end of the island. No swimming beach, but surf, fishing, trails and, in winter, seal walks.
Lazy Point Beach
The sunset. A Napeague Bay beach that looks north and west, so the summer sun sets over water rather than dunes.
How these were chosen
Each pick rests on facts from the agency that runs the beach: lifeguard hours, facilities, water type and rules, checked in October 2026. Where the choice is a judgment, such as “best for surf,” it follows from those facts plus geography and we say so. The list excludes private clubs and any beach that publishes nothing we could verify.
It also excludes prices. Parking and permit costs differ by town, village and residency, and they change every spring. Every beach page links to Hamptons Beach Pass for that side of the question, so this page can stay focused on the beach itself.
Picking among the ten
If you are visiting once and want the classic South Fork day, take Main Beach or Cooper’s. If you have small children, go to Foster Memorial Beach. If you want a full day in one place, Hither Hills is the only beach on the list with a campground. Everything else is a specialist. If you are not a resident, read Hamptons Beach Pass on non-resident beach access first, because the answer to “can I park there” differs by beach.
