The South Fork has two coasts. The Atlantic side is the famous one: waves, long white beaches, surf and the village beaches. The bay side, on Peconic and Gardiners Bays, Noyac Bay and Shelter Island Sound, is calmer, quieter and faces north, which changes everything from water temperature to sunsets.
If a child or a nervous swimmer is in the group, start with the calm water beaches. If you want waves or surf, start with Main Beach or Ditch Plains.

Water quality is the real bay trade
Suffolk County’s monitoring is tiered and risk-based. Beaches near streams, creeks or storm-water outfalls, or on poorly flushed embayments, are sampled once or twice a week. Lower-risk beaches, such as those on the Atlantic, are sampled less often. Advisories follow heavy rain, and the water quality guide explains how to check.
A good combination
Use both: ocean in the morning for the waves, bay in the afternoon for calm and the sunset. In Amagansett, Atlantic Avenue and Big Albert’s Landing are a short drive apart. The Amagansett itinerary shows how.
Questions
Is the bay or the ocean warmer in the Hamptons?
Bay water typically warms faster in early summer. The only published station reading is at Montauk, and its monthly averages are on the water temperature page.
Which side of the Hamptons has better beaches?
It depends on the day. The ocean side has waves, surf and the classic look; the bay side has calm water, warmer swims and summer sunsets over the water.
