Wide-angle view of a huge flat beach at low tide, the wet sand mirroring a cloud-streaked sky, tiny waves in the distance.

Family beaches

Lifeguards, bathrooms, showers and lunch: the beaches that cover all four.

A family beach day runs on logistics: a lifeguard in sight, a bathroom close by, a shower at the end and lunch that does not require leaving. The beaches below cover most or all of that. Babies and toddlers belong on a calm-water beach. School-age kids who want waves have good options on the ocean.

Check the lifeguard calendar before you go. The Town of East Hampton staffs weekends only until mid-June, while the Village of Westhampton Beach staffed daily from June 29 in 2026.

Ages and stages

For infants, shade matters more than waves. Bring your own, since only a few beaches, such as Maidstone Park and Ponquogue, have pavilions. For toddlers, a marked bay swim area is easiest. For older children, junior lifeguard programs and Town-sponsored programs at Foster Memorial Beach run in summer.

What to pack

Water, sunscreen and a trash bag are the minimum, and the what to pack guide has the rest. Town of Southampton beaches bar alcohol and glass, and several operators bar dogs in summer.
