Dogs on Hamptons beaches depend on who runs the sand and what day it is. The Town of Southampton bars dogs from its beach facilities April 1 to October 1. The Village of East Hampton bars them from 9am to 6pm May 15 to September 15. The Town of East Hampton allows them in limited stretches during the day and early or late without limit. Outside those windows, most of the coast opens up.
The table below is built from each operator’s published rules. After it, a short list of unguarded East Hampton Town beaches where early-morning and evening walks are realistic, and a link to the off-season beach guide for the long months when restrictions lift.
| Operator | Summer rule | Off-season rule | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Town of East Hampton | May 15 to Sep 15, 10am to 6pm: on ocean beaches 500 ft from a paved road end (with listed exceptions), on bay beaches 300 ft; leashed while crossing restricted stretches. Outside those hours, under control. | Sep 16 to May 14: restrictions lifted; dogs under control and out of nesting areas | Official page |
| Village of East Hampton | May 15 to Sep 15: no dogs 9am to 6pm; other hours leashed within 300 ft of a road end. (The Town's FAQ words the Village rule slightly differently, May to Sep 30; follow the Village's own posted signs.) | Outside the summer window: under control, cleaned up after, out of nesting areas | Official page |
| Town of Southampton | April 1 to October 1: dogs not permitted at Town beach facilities. On unguarded Town and Trustee access roads, dogs are allowed July 1 to Labor Day only before 9am and after 6pm. | October 1 to April 1: allowed under immediate control, never within 50 ft of posted plover areas | Official page |
| Village of Southampton | Pets are not permitted at Cooper's Beach. The Village publishes no dog rule for its other beaches. | Not published on the Village beaches page; read the sign at the road end | Official page |
| Westhampton Beach, Quogue, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island, Suffolk County and State Parks | The pages we checked publish no beach dog rule. | Read the posted rules at the entrance; ask the park or village office before you bring a dog | Official page |
Where a dog walk is realistic
Lazy Point Beach
An unguarded Napeague Bay beach under the Town of East Hampton’s dog rules: early and late walks are the realistic window in summer.
Napeague Lane Beach
Long, empty and unguarded. Town of East Hampton rules apply, so mornings and evenings are the summer plan.
Little Albert’s Landing Beach
A small bay landing with trails and no lifeguards, so no swim areas to avoid.
Beach Lane Beach (Wainscott)
Wainscott’s unguarded ocean beach, a quiet walk once Town restrictions lift on September 16.
Town Line Beach (Wainscott)
The same: unguarded ocean sand and an open-ended off-season dog walk.
Montauk Point State Park
Off-season walks on state land. The park lists no dog rule, so check posted rules and the park office.
What the rules actually say
Town of East Hampton beaches in season (May 15 to September 15): restrictions apply 10am to 6pm. On ocean beaches dogs may be 500 feet from a paved road end, except at beaches listed in the Town code; on bay beaches, 300 feet. Dogs must be leashed while crossing restricted stretches. Before 10am and after 6pm, and from September 16 to May 14, dogs need only be kept under control.
Village of East Hampton: the Village says no dogs on the beach from 9am to 6pm between May 15 and September 15, and leashed within 300 feet of a road end at other hours. The Town’s FAQ words the Village rule slightly differently, citing the second Sunday in May to September 30, so follow the Village’s own signs.
Town of Southampton: dogs are not permitted at beach recreation facilities April 1 to October 1, and are allowed October 1 to April 1 under immediate control, never within 50 feet of areas posted for piping plovers. On Town and Trustee access roads (unguarded waterfront), dogs are allowed July 1 to Labor Day only between 6pm and 9am, within 150 feet of the access road.
Village of Southampton: pets are not permitted at Cooper’s Beach. The Village publishes no dog rule for its other beaches.
Everywhere else, including Westhampton Beach, Quogue, Sag Harbor, Shelter Island, Suffolk County and the state parks, the pages we checked list no beach dog rule. Ask the office and read the sign.
Etiquette that applies everywhere
Keep dogs out of dunes and posted nesting areas, clean up after them and carry fresh water, since drinking salt water can make a dog sick. Do not leave a dog in a parked car in warm weather. These points come from the Town of Southampton’s published dog guidance and apply on every beach. The nesting birds guide explains why the 50-foot rule exists.
