Indian Wells is the Amagansett beach to pick when you want an ordinary, well-run Atlantic day with a guard stand in sight and lunch close at hand. It is a lifeguard-protected ocean beach with accessible restrooms and food trucks, on the same open ocean as Atlantic Avenue Beach a short drive west.

This is a beach with surf, not a pond. Waves are modest on a settled summer day and can build fast with a south swell, so the flag and the guard’s advice count for more than the calendar. Swim only inside the guarded area from 9am to 5pm. Two rules at the road end are strict: no alcohol during lifeguard hours within 1,000 feet, and no smoking within 500 feet of protected swimming areas.

Anyone with a beach wheelchair question has one of the better answers in town here. The Town lays an accessible mat every summer and keeps a free surf wheelchair with the guards. Restrooms are open mid-May to mid-October, and the beach stays open all year with easier dog rules out of season.

Parking is for East Hampton residents with a Town permit, so everyone else should read what Indian Wells requires on Hamptons Beach Pass before driving out. Renting rather than owning? The renter’s answer for East Hampton is a separate page, and the rest of the hamlet’s sand is on the Amagansett page.
