A quiet road-end beach in morning fog, sand blown into soft drifts, ghostly grass, the sea barely visible, pale and calm.

Town Line Beach (Wainscott)

The road end where East Hampton meets Southampton at the ocean: sand, distance, nothing else.

  • Atlantic Ocean
  • No lifeguards
Best for
Distance and sand, away from the guarded-beach crowds
Go when
Early or late, on weekdays
Mind this
No lifeguard, no facilities, and private-property signs along the dunes

Town Line Beach is the road end in Wainscott where East Hampton meets Southampton at the ocean. There is no lifeguard, swimming is prohibited without one, parking is by Town permit and designated vehicle areas are for drive-on pass holders. No facilities are listed.

That brevity is the whole pitch. Come for distance and sand, stay on the public stretch and respect private-property signs. Nothing is sold, so bring water. Camping and littering are prohibited, and beach fires follow the Town’s separate regulations. Dogs must be under control, with summer limits from 10am to 6pm.

To swim, drive to a guarded beach. Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack is the nearest Town of Southampton option, and Georgica Beach is the nearest Village of East Hampton one. The unguarded-beaches guide explains who answers a 911 call when no guard is on the sand. Hamptons Beach Pass covers the permits, and the Wainscott page shows the other ocean road end, Beach Lane.
