Surf fishing

The classic South Fork surf-casting beaches are county and state parks.

Striped bass fishing is the South Fork's best-known surf-casting draw. Shinnecock East is a favorite spot for striped bass, and Cupsogue has some of the finest saltwater bass fishing on the Island. At the east end, Montauk Point and Hither Hills allow fishing year-round with a state permit.

Each place comes with its own permit rules, so read them before you load the truck. The beach walks guide covers access on foot, and the off-season guide explains why October and November are the quiet months.

Permits and access, by place

  • Montauk Point and Hither Hills (State Parks): fishing is year-round with an annual sport fishing permit (available January 1 to March 31 and September 8 to December 31 in 2026) or a seven-day permit (one per season, May 23 to September 7, 2026). Night fishing and 4WD beach vehicle permits are separate. Details and fees are on Hamptons Beach Pass.
  • Cupsogue and Shinnecock East (Suffolk County): Cupsogue requires a Recreational Vehicle Permit for outer-beach access and camping. Shinnecock East allows off-road vehicles on the outer beach and offers camping to self-contained campers with a county permit.
  • Town of East Hampton: vehicle access on the beach needs a Town drive-on pass and is restricted 10am to 6pm in season. Some bay beaches have launching ramps that need a Town parking or launch permit.
  • Georgica Pond: a shellfish permit is required to take crabs from the pond.

Etiquette

Keep clear of swim areas and lifeguard-designated zones. The Village of East Hampton bars fishing and watercraft in designated swimming areas. Carry out line and bait, and stay away from posted nesting zones.
