Quiet sand away from the crowds, a tall dune with a break in the grass, a flat calm sea, pale lilac early light.

No lifeguard; shore break and rips with nobody watching

Wiborg Beach, at the end of Highway Behind the Pond, is East Hampton’s low-key ocean access. It has no lifeguards, and the Village’s three guarded beaches are Main, Georgica and Two Mile Hollow.

For walkers it is the most useful of the unguarded pair. It sits between Main Beach and Georgica Beach, which makes the walk to either shorter than starting from the car. For swimmers it is not a destination. With an onshore wind and surf up, the shore break and rips are as strong here as anywhere on the Atlantic and no one is watching. Read what to do on an unguarded beach before you choose it.

There are no restrooms or bins, so carry out what you carry in. Vehicles are barred from Village beaches 9am to 6pm from May 15 to September 15, and no dogs in those hours. Parking and permits are on Hamptons Beach Pass.
