Crescent Beach, also called Louis’ Beach, is Shelter Island’s most visited beach. It lies on the north shore, close to the North Ferry landing, looking across the bay toward Greenport and Southold. It is lifeguarded, with a comfort station, and offers nearly half a mile of sand with guards on duty from 10am to 5pm in summer.

The water is bay water, so calm and good for paddling, and local operators rent kayaks and paddleboards nearby. The beach also hosts the island’s annual Independence Day fireworks, so expect a different crowd that evening. Because it faces north, it is better for sunsets than the island’s south shore: see the sunset guide. If you are arriving by ferry, the Shelter Island itinerary shows how.

Swim only inside the guarded area while the guards are on duty. Shelter Island beach permits are required from May 15 to September 15 and sold at the Town Clerk’s Office. Details are on Hamptons Beach Pass.
