Beaches in Shelter Island

Two guarded beaches, one quiet spit and a ferry to reach them.

Shelter Island has two lifeguarded town beaches and a handful of quieter ones. Wades Beach on the south side faces Shelter Island Sound and suits families; Crescent Beach on the north side faces Greenport and is the island’s busiest. Shell Beach is a narrow, unguarded spit with birdlife.

The Town also lists Menhaden Lane Beach and Fresh Pond as town landings rather than bathing beaches. Reaching the island takes a ferry, so plan the day around the schedule; Hamptons Commute’s Shelter Island page covers getting there, including the North Ferry and South Ferry.

The three beaches

Beach Side of island Lifeguards Character
Wades Beach South, on the Sound Yes Shallow, family-friendly, accessible pavilion
Crescent Beach North, facing Greenport Yes Wide sand, rentals nearby, July 4 fireworks

Beach parking permits are required May 15 to September 15, according to the Chamber of Commerce, and are sold at the Town Clerk’s Office; permit rules and prices are on Hamptons Beach Pass. The island’s calm water makes it one of the best places on the East End for small children, as the calm water guide explains.

The Shelter Island itinerary shows how to string Wades, Crescent and the ferry into one day.
